Care In the Sun
Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun can cause skin cancer. Tanning and sunburn are an indication of skin damage. Skin cancer is becoming more common. It can take 20 years or more for skin cancer to develop.
Childrens skin is more delicate and prone to skin damage. Children can be unaware of their skin burning and need constant reminders to take care in the sun.
How to take care in the sun
- Wear t-shirts and loose clothing
- Wear a hat
- Avoid the sun when it is strongest stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm
- Wear sunglasses with UV protection
- Drink plenty to avoid dehydration
- Wear sunscreen
If your child gets sunburn
- Sponge their skin gently with cold water
- Apply after sun or calamine lotion
- Give them plenty of fluids
- If in doubt, seek medical advice
