Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in NI affecting 1 in 12 women before the age of 75. It is most common and easiest to detect in women over 50.
Breast awareness means knowing what your breasts normally look and feel like. You should check your breasts once a month.
A week after your monthly period.
If you are breast feeding – check after a feed.
On the first day of the month after the menopause or if you have had a hysterectomy.
What to look for..
- A change in the size or shape of your breast
- A lump or hardness in the breast or under the armpit
- A new dent, pucker or dimple
- Veins that stand out more than normal
- Bleeding or discharge
- A rash
- An inverted nipple if it was not like this before
- Any discomfort or odd feeling in a breast
- Anything that is different for YOU.
How to check your breasts...
By looking:
- Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides, look at each breast.
- Lift your arms above your head and check them again.
- Lean forward the look at the shape of your breasts
By feeling:
- Check each breast separately in the bath or shower using soapy hands
- Keep your fingers together and use them flat over the whole of each breast and under your arm.
If you do find a lump or notice anything unusual you should make an appointment to see your GP immediately.
